Welcome to the Victorian Preservation Center's Historic
Cohen-Bray House
1440 29th Avenue
Oakland City Landmark since 1975
National Register of Historic Places since 1976
Mission Statement The mission
of the Victorian Preservation Center of Oakland
is to interpret the East Bay in the later nineteenth century. The
Center seeks to accomplish this goal by promoting the study of material
culture of the era and the social and economic life of Oakland, the East
Bay and the San Francisco Bay Area as represented by the Cohen Bray
House.
The uniqueness of this house,
what makes it stand out above all others is that it is still lived in by
members of the original family. They with the help of the friends and
the professionals on the board have made the effort to preserve and
protect the original interiors. You will find the furniture, wallpaper,
pictures, rugs and personal items such as diaries, shopping lists and
wedding presents are still in their places. Tours also include family
stories of the neighbor hood and what life was like since the house was
built in 1884.
WHAT'S NEW?
We need your help! Winter
storms have brought many large new leaks to the roof of this old house,
destroying parts of the interior plaster and staining the wall papers in
the back hall and dripping three stories down into the breakfast room.
We cannot save this house unless we can protect it from the elements! By contributing to our brick fund you can help pay for a
new roof and foundation to stop the destruction of time. Please check
out this link for more information on how you can help.
30 more bricks! Many thanks
to the Oakmead Foundation who has generously given a $30,000 donation to
help our cause. This wonderful and thoughtful gift will go into our
Capital repair fund for the roof and the foundation. This is not enough!
we need you to to add to our
Bricks! Follow this link to see how you can help out.
Mitchell grant awarded!
Money to go toward hiring preservation consultants to perform a
condition assessment of the historic wallpapers, plaster, woodwork, and
carpets throughout the Cohen-Bray House. It represents the first step
in our long-term plan for meticulous conservation and care of the
irreplaceable interiors familiar to all of you who have visited. Photos from Victorian
